Top reasons to buy Solid Edge

1. Synchronous technology for fast/flexible modeling

Solid Edge

Getting products to the market faster, executing revisions quicker and reusing more imported 2D and 3D designs are the key points of synchronous technology. This breakthrough technology eliminates the barriers to productive 3D design found in history-based or explicit modeling systems. History-based technology requires design pre-planning. History based systems enable highly automated design but require tremendous pre-planning and models tend to fail during update regeneration. Explicit systems, while fast, don’t offer design automation.

Solid Edge combines the best of both worlds. Solid Edge with synchronous technology combines the speed of explicit modeling with the precise control of parameterized design to provide the fastest most flexible design experience possible. And with Solid Edge’s integrated design approach, users can experience the speed and flexibility with synchronous and have ordered features to document a process, all in one systems. Designers can choose the most appropriate technology yet leverage either technology depending on need.

By eliminating the history tree, engineers can develop models with few or no commands and avoid lengthy design pre-planning. And because features are independent, engineers can make changes regardless of how the model was built. And since edits are localized to just the design area, edits to the first operation can happen as fast as the last. Addressing changes to imported data has always been a problem in any traditional CAD system, but with synchronous technology, changing foreign data with either grab-and-go tools or 3D Driving Dimensions, you have the same flexibility as with native designs.

One key aspect of this technology is that users don’t need to become experts, new or casual users can stretch models into shape getting the power of 3D with the simplicity of 2D.

The key value to partners is a highly differentiated product that can be used for any design task. And in addition provides their customers a simple way to leverage synchronous selectively. Leverage synchronous technology where possible and ensure prospects understand differences between the different modeling techniques as well as dynamic and direct editing, a good applications engineer will make them ‘look similar. Point out users still need to pre plan changes, model regeneration still takes place and fixing failed features is still likely.

2. Better transition and reuse from 2D or 3D

Solid Edge

2D Part drawings can be used to recreate existing designs in 3D that inherit 2D manufacturing dimensions automatically, while assembly drawings can be used to drive the fit and position of a complete product. Synchronous technology enables 3D models from other systems to be edited as though they are native Solid Edge. Move to Solid Edge faster and reuse existing data.

Imported AutoCAD data can be turned into 3D parts with the simple drag of a handle and edits can be made with familiar 2D concepts like stretching. Synchronous technology keeps the process simple by avoiding a history tree, freeing the user to make fast flexible edits. This capability is ‘key’ to winning in our largest target market, prospects moving from AutoCAD.

When matching drawings and models are available from other systems, 2D manufacturing dimensions migrate to 3D into editable 3D driving dimensions on the imported 3D models to preserve design intent. Manufacturing dimensions such as distance between holes and overall height across multiple features become the driver, not model or sketch dimensions. Newly added dimensions are ready for edits andany geometric intent “lost” in translation found and maintained with Live Rules. No other system provides such a complete process for moving design intent from 2D to 3D..

2D can also be built into 3D assembly design with a hybrid 2D/3D workflow. Users can take DWG or DXF drawings and use them to define and drive assembly layouts. Moving from 2D to 3D is really just the first step in maximizing a company’s true potential. No other company offers such a complete solution.

Don’t forget Solid Edge 2D Drafting is free and includes all 2D design functionality from the full Solid Edge product and translation tools to ease the transition for 2D. It is a perfect starting point into 3D and eliminates the need to pay for AutoCAD upgrades.

With automatic mapping of Solid Edge mechanical symbols to AutoCAD formats, leveraging Solid Edge 2D Drafting not only increases productivity but generates interest and leads while maximizing the value of Solid Edge. In departments with low CAD or 2D only requirements- such as the shop floor or research groups- Solid Edge 2D Drafting can lead the way towards investment in the full Solid Edge 3D portfolio.

Moving 3D data into Solid Edge is efficient and cost-effective. Our bulk migration tools retain key model intelligence such as assembly constraints, hole features, part materials and in the case of SolidWorks, complete model-drawing associativity. Reuse reduces production downtime due to rework and is a compelling rationale for replacing complete 3D accounts inhabited by Dassault, Autodesk, or PTC.

3. Complete digital design

Solid Edge

Build complete 3D digital prototypes and optimize designs before production. Design assemblies with machined, cast, or stylized components. Process-specific applications simplify frame, piping, tube, wiring, weldments, and mold tooling design. Show operations and appearance with exploded views, photo-realistic renderings, and animations. Solid Edge has all the tools for your digital prototyping needs.

Fast efficient digital design requires a complete set of modeling tools. The tool set must extend past part and assembly design and include specialty applications for frame design, capturing welding operations, stylized design and more. And more importantly, those applications need to be designed for the task at hand. We call them process specific applications which provide the user with only the tools and operations needed to complete a certain task.

To give engineers the ultimate in digital design, synchronous technology is available to speed both the development and refinement process. With this technology users can find and refine fit and position problems before manufacturing.

4. Optimized for massive assemblies

Solid Edge

Solid Edge is architected to handle assemblies of just about any size. Efficient display management tools help user focus on specific design areas or establish regions of design with Zones and for a boost in performance, designs can be opened in a lightweight mode. Solid Edge helps you create and manage all of your assemblies from 1 to over 500,000 parts.

At the heart of the system are Siemens components such as Parasolid and D-Cubed for both modeling and part position solving. These components are licensed by our competition, without them their systems would not work. When talking to prospects always ensure they know this.

Synchronous technology is also available to speed both the development and refinement process, because the overhead of inter-part relationships are no longer needed. So users spend more time engineering and less time understanding how models are constructed and driving the CAD system. The competition does not have synchronous technology; use it to differentiate at every opportunity.

To reduce screen clutter and help users focus on the task at hand Solid Edge incorporates several innovative technologies such as simplified parts and assemblies that improve performance by reducing display data of single parts or entire sub-assemblies. Inactive parts display components for better visualization but don’t load the geometry to extend assembly size capacity and 64 bit support allow access to more memory if needed. Solid Edge leads the way with these resource saving techniques, but on occasion our competition may be able to demo something that looks similar but they do not deliver the full impact of the combined tools found in Solid Edge. They can usually be found to be just demo tools in response to our capabilities, go deep enough and prospects will discover this for themselves.

Working with massive assemblies is not just about being able to open them and spin them around on the screen. Lead designers can conceptualize and develop a skeleton with Zero-D before investing time in model development. Unique to Solid Edge, most companies will see the benefit Zero-D delivers.

Large assemblies generally have larger design teams assigned to different parts of the design. To let engineers define a specific workspace Solid Edge has a concept of Zones.

Utilizing a special architecture, drawings of massive assemblies can be opened in a fraction of what other systems offer, why wait for the 3D model to load in the background (this can take a long time in other systems on large assemblies) if you simply want to view or print a drawing. Quick sheet templates allow automatic view creation that ensure company standard composition in record time.

Our competition will also claim to have large assembly capabilities, but they don’t have everything available in Solid Edge and they usually just work in isolation. To deliver maximum effect, prospects need to understand it’s the combined system resource and time saving capabilities in Solid Edge that delver the results. While some of these capabilities can be demonstrated, others such as automatic part unloading work in the background so be sure to explain Solid Edge large assembly performance tools while delivering your overview and during your sales pitch.

To give engineers the ultimate in digital design, synchronous technology is available to speed both the development and refinement process. With this technology users can find and refine fit and position problems before manufacturing.

5. Best sheet metal modeling in its class

Solid Edge

Solid Edge is the industry’s first sheet metal application to be based on synchronous technology. This isn’t just a different approach to design but it offers a completely new and improved method for sheet metal modeling with synchronous technology.

Designers can create models with few or no commands by dragging 2D sketch regions into 3D or simply pulling model edges into flanges. And because features are independent of order and each other, faster more flexible edits can be done. Users can edit the first operation as fast as the last. Modeling and manipulation aren’t just for native designs either.

Designers can now modify imported models from customers or suppliers with the same capability as with native designs.

A single command can convert a 3D part into a sheet metal component- complete with appropriate bends and tabs. For many complex parts, it is especially advantageous to create a solid part, then convert that into sheet metal as needed.

Dedicated sheet metal analysis capabilities significantly reduces the need for physical prototypes, thereby reducing material and testing costs, while saving design time.

Rapid creation of formed, stamped and deep-drawn components is realized via creation of a flattened "blank" from a 3D part model. This single command generates a blank size calculated with respect to the formability of specific materials.

Folded 3D parts can be flattened and written directly to a DXF file in one simple operation and be ready for import into nesting software. This step lets users create CNC ready files for cutting and bending machines without the need to first create a drawing.

Designers can also document the manufacturing steps such as defining the bending sequence independent of the modeling steps. These bend tables can be added to a drawing with full bend annotations added automatically.

Our competition has sheet metal design, but Solid Edge is acknowledged as the market leader for sheet metal design. Show we deliver tools for the complete process from design to manufacture. Our competition also has no synchronous technology to streamline design and editing of sheet metal components and imported data.

6. Production-proven 2D drafting

Solid Edge

High quality products begin with high quality drawings and Solid Edge is the industry’s best choice for creating accurate, high quality 2D drawings from 3D models. Views include standard, auxiliary, section, detail, broken and isometric and detailing is fast with dimension retrieval and automatic parts lists with balloons. Drawings are always kept up to date alerting you of any change. For creating layouts or schematics, industry standard symbols are included to speed creation. We’ll focus on three key components that make up Solid Edge’s drafting system: view creation, detailing, and performance, but Solid Edge also includes standalone 2D drawing capabilities.

Engineers can create all 2D drawing view types of 3D parts or assemblies from common orthogonal views, sections, detail, and many more. Views can even be shaded giving your isometric view a sense of realism.

The most popular standards are supported ensuring dimensions and annotations are in compliance. For speeding up the detailing process, hole tables, and bend sequence tables can be added to help document the manufacturing process. Assembly parts lists with automatic ballooning are just a few clicks away.

Solid Edge drafting is built for speed. Drawing creation can be automated with “quick sheet” templates and view generations based on Parasolid are fast and accurate. Drawing updates are optimized by regenerating only the affected areas.

While our competition certainly has automated 2D from 3D, Solid Edge has set the standard for automatic 2D drawing development and is capable of standalone 2D in a single system. Here are some of the details you could quote that set us apart in a production environment.

7. Integrated design analysis

Solid Edge

Simulating product operation is more than just FEA. Simplify and solve complex problems with Goal Seeking, design standard components such as shafts, beams and cams using built-in engineering rules, and understand how moving parts interact with motion simulation. Solid Edge Simulation can analyze the integrity parts or assemblies and Femap can be used for advanced simulation. Reduce the need for physical prototypes with simulation.

Solid Edge offers a completely scalable analysis solution that gives designers a wide variety of solutions to meet the most demanding tasks. For static and modal analysis needs within parts and sheet metal models, we offer Simulation Express, a perfect fit for getting quick initial results. Simulation Express is free and included in Classic and above- built into Solid Edge and leverages proven Femap and NX Nastran functionality. Designers can see deflections, stress concentrations, factors of safety, and with modal, determine a parts natural frequency which will help you understand if a part will shake apart.

For assembly and part analysis, designers can use Solid Edge Simulation. It is free in Premium and an add-on for Classic and Foundation. Solid Edge Simulation leverages Femap and Nastran technology. Multiple studies can be performed solving for linear statics, modal, and buckling, as well as steady state thermal studies. To simulate a realistic environment, loads, constraints, and assembly contact constraints are provided. While meshing is automatic, users can refine the mesh inside a part or across different assembly components to add detail where needed without sacrificing performance. This system is the perfect for the multi-discipline engineer.

The design optimization tool predicts model behaviors under specified loading conditions in response to multiple variable changes. When design refinements are needed, synchronous technology is available to help users edit geometry with unbounded speed and flexibility.

Both of these solutions are scalable to Femap for a more advanced analysis needs such as thermal, buckling, assembly and more. Implementing Simulation Express, Simulation, or Femap is a proven way to reduce the need for physical prototypes.

Our competition does not have synchronous technology and will not be able to make unplanned design refinements as efficiently as Solid Edge. They also cannot use simplified models that remove unnecessary features such as rounds, holes, fillets etc… for faster model simulations.

8. Design Collaboration…including Mobile Collaboration

Solid Edge

For design collaboration, Solid Edge offers a full suite of tools that let designers author, edit, distribute, and explore design alternatives- at any time, from anywhere.

Solid Edge with synchronous technology lets you document 3D models directly speeding design iterations. Your teams can better visualize an idea by using 3D data together with PMI - skipping 2D drawing development. And with synchronous technology, casual users can manipulate 3D models with little or no understanding of how or where they were created - a major advantage over the competition.

Pack and Go is a standard capability of Solid Edge and enables users to quickly package up a set of Solid Edge files for distribution to a supplier or customer. And engineering teams can package design and supporting data into a compact collaboration file that can be sent through email in a packaged file better known as PCF. The recipients can use XpresReview, a free download to view and markup the contents. This process can be tightly managed and controlled through Insight, Solid Edge SP or Teamcenter.

Another long-standing, uncomplicated solution comes via the free Solid Edge Viewer- built to view Solid Edge assembly, part, sheet metal and draft files, as well as DXF and AutoCAD DWG files.

Recent developments in tablet devices are bringing major benefits to designers who need full access to their design projects while in the office, on the shop floor, and when traveling to meet with suppliers or customers. To satisfy these demands, full Solid Edge design sessions can be run on the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 & 4 tablets, providing users with the ability to solve engineering problems and collaborate effectively while mobile.

And the free Solid Edge Mobile Viewer App is available for Windows, Android and iOS devices and permits quality control, field engineers and purchasing agents to access the data they need to efficiently perform their tasks. They can view 2D Solid Edge drawings and 3D Solid Edge part models and assemblies, and use finger gestures to improve productivity when selecting documents, scrolling between drawing sheets and rotating and zooming 3D models.
